LXG 3 - Cobra 1

LXG’s first concern was getting to the game on time. Schuman tunnels were closed and there were huge tailbacks around LXG’s spiritual home, the Parc 50naire. No problem for our driver Endrik, who flew down the other lane without fear of oncoming traffic, overtaking 30 bemused Belgians. “Guys, I’m from the north of Italy. Imagine if I was from the south.”

A jubilant and punctual LXG were soon getting ready for the game. One bright spark noticed we were missing something. “Where’s the kit?” Some time later Cata showed up with both sets. Never before had Cata been so warmly received by a dozen half naked men. As far as we know.

Recently Cobra’s form had looked iffy but they had built up quite a reputation at the beginning of the season, handsomely winning all of their first six games. The Lord of all Scousers was exchanging scally best practice in Marseille and Giovanni was promoting his eau de toilette in Italy, so LXG would face them with a new look centre back partnership of Vivien and Cata.

The opening minutes proved a midfield battle though – and quite balanced - with both sides needing to be on their toes. LXG were the first to create chances. Paolo was unlucky to hit the post and Shaju went close too. The deadlock was broken however when Chris’ ill-advised backpass mutated into a fine through ball for the Cobra striker, who finished well. LXG’s woes were compounded when Paulus Romanus got injured minutes after.

It was 0-1 at half time but spirits were still high. Fresh legs came on for the second half and the team was reorganised. Soon, a fine Peter cross from the byline found the head of Endrik who finished in style. 1-1, and the momentum was with LXG. The small rabble of fans, bolstered by Eoin’s arrival (by taxi!), went wild.

A second breakthrough came thanks to the arrival of Per “the Viking”, making his first appearance since early in the season. Wearing the mythical number 9 shirt (the only one that fits him), he took up a wide attacking position à la Larsson. His hearty voice and surging runs were rewarded when another perfect cross from Peter (carrying on Puskas’ legacy) found him at the back post. He finished superbly. From half a yard out. Well, we have seen them missed.

A merciless Per initiated the killer blow for Cobra, curling an incisive pass in from the wing. The move led to a perfectly-placed Endrik header across to Shaju who gratefully slotted home to put the game beyond doubt.

Cobra had played well throughout, but their goal kicks were abysmal. One particularly bad effort fell to Shaju while the keeper was out of position. Shaju launched a long-range rocket from close to the halfway line that nearly punished the Cobra keeper, and raised a loud “ooooh” from the home support.

3-1 it stayed and LXG march on.

Man of the match: Endrik

Chiefs Kapellev 0 - LXG 0

The Chiefs, led by Vic's boss, managed to nick a point from LXG.

So we stole their match report:

[Division 5C] CHIEFS 2-LXG CINQUANTENAIRE : 0 - 0
(Guy).
