Mireille Wemmel 0 - LXG 5
This match was important for several reasons:
• We had to gain revenge for the first game of the season, versus the same opponents, which had been ridiculously reversed in their favour after an administrative error;
• We wanted to keep our recent streak of good results going;
• It was the final game of the year and we wanted to finish on a high note; and
• It was bloody cold so we needed to keep warm.
Our starting eleven was as follows:
Super Al in goal.
Defence of Napoleon 3, Napoleon, McScouser, Le Fils de Puskas.
Midfield of “Martijn Martijn”, Copacabana, Rafa, Roman Scouse Manc.
Forward line of Primadonna, and Alfio.
Their team consisted of a Boer war reunion party with lots of physical aggression but very little in the way of finesse or basic human niceties.
In some bizarre pre-match confusion we changed pitches about three times with this perhaps being the opposition’s only tactic in trying to put us off our game.
With LXG concentrated from the off and one or two hard tackles from the Boer contingent we were keen to get settled quickly on the mudbath of a pitch and score early. And score we did – Primadonna latching on to a great through ball to oh so delicately lob the ball over the onrushing keeper.
1-0 LXG!!!!!
The rest of the half consisted of LXG trying to play football, defending resolutely, scrapping hard in midfield and trying to use the wings where possible. With the half drawing to a close we were feeling perhaps hard done by to only be one-up when a bit of Roman (Scouse?) magic geed us all up...
A flicked ball came across to Paolo who had a tough bit of control with the ball at an odd height. Yet miraculously he managed and as the ball popped up for him a wonder volley from the Marco van Basten school of attacking theory was so magically created!!!!! Clearly after such a goal only a very calm celebration ensued? Of course bloody not! Like a crazed Marco Tardelli our Roman fighter flew like a jet fighter to the other side of the pitch surrounded by ecstatic LXG teammates.
2-0 LXG!!!!!
Half time whistle blew soon after and the whole team trooped off feeling rather pleased with itself.
As we struggled in vain to stay warm it seemed the ref had forgotten about us and had fallen asleep in a hot bath. Napoleon, perhaps envious, rushed off to fetch him and he soon emerged, followed by two of the opposition players. Bizarre.
Shaju Scouser came on for the glorious coach with Fran Lazio slotting in to the right back position moving Peter to his favoured right midfield place. Within a short period LXG were up another goal. Following some battling play by the midfield the ball was slipped through to Alfio. In an attempt to dribble the whole defence and keeper twice we wondered at which part of the afternoon the ball would finally go in but in it did!!!
3-0 LXG!!!!!
James, in only his second game of the season, joined us as the third substitute. Getting stuck in from the start he had the Dalglish-like awareness to slip the ball in between two defenders for Peter to run on to. Being used to him scoring time and time again from such positions it was no surprise when super Puskas finished the move off with a great goal.
4-0 LXG!!!!!
To their credit the Boer select 11 kept trying apart from one or two who seemed content on decrying our lack of fair play and then shouting orders in Flemish to hack our players down! Our expert linguistic chief Shaju was our Flemish spy in their midst.
One more goal was important as it would equal the score they had so unfairly received back in September. And one of our Italian contingent obliged – Alfio again moving on to a great ball and dribbling past the keeper to make it a Fantastic Five.
5-0 LXG!!!!!
With all parts of the team doing their best and working hard it was a great performance to end the year. As Napoleon noted afterwards it was the fourth clean sheet in a row for a defence which had excelled last season.
LXG certainly, on recent form, can hope for a splendid second half of the season with a high position something we should be aiming for.
